ByteDance purchases over 100,000 tonnes of carbon credits from Rubicon Carbon

ByteDance, the global technology firm behind TikTok, has purchased the rights to retire more than 100,000 tonnes of carbon credits through Rubicon Carbon’s portfolio-based offering, Rubicon Carbon Tonnes (RCTs), as part of its goal to reach carbon neutrality by 2030.

The transaction includes a combination of nature-based avoidance credits and carbon removal credits, selected to deliver both immediate and long-term climate benefits. ByteDance has committed to reducing at least 90% of its operational emissions by the end of the decade, with the remaining emissions to be offset through high-quality carbon credits.

“We are thrilled to welcome ByteDance as a buyer of Rubicon Carbon Tonnes,” said Tom Montag, CEO of Rubicon Carbon. “ByteDance’s decision to invest in RCTs signals a serious, long-term commitment to climate leadership and a recognition that the path to net zero must be built on high-quality, durable carbon solutions.”

Rubicon Carbon Tonnes are portfolios of carbon credits sourced from global projects across nature-based solutions, carbon removals, and super pollutant mitigation. The credits are actively managed by Rubicon’s internal science team to ensure their environmental integrity and impact.

Ian Gill, Global Head of Sustainability at ByteDance, stated: “We greatly appreciate the time and expertise that the Rubicon Carbon team invested to help us make high-value and impactful decisions within the carbon credit landscape. As we advance toward our 2030 carbon neutrality goal, it’s critical that we build long-term relationships with trusted partners. This purchase marks an important step in that journey.”
