The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) has published a new report exploring how the construction sector can align sustainability efforts with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).
The report, released at the end of Professor Mike Kagioglou’s term as CIOB President, is the result of a series of roundtable discussions involving senior figures from construction, infrastructure, consultancy, and academia. It includes industry case studies and aims to serve as a practical guide for professionals across the sector.
Professor Kagioglou said: “As this report and many others have demonstrated, it is simply not enough to continue at our current pace. The UN SDGs offer a useful tool and framework for addressing our approach in a holistic way.”
He added that while some companies are already making significant progress, the report offers examples that may inspire others in the industry to enhance their contribution toward sustainable development.
The report argues that the SDGs provide more than a compliance framework. They also have the potential to unlock innovation, strengthen collaboration, and highlight leadership within the built environment sector. It outlines how companies—from small and medium enterprises to major contractors—can contribute meaningfully to goals covering climate, biodiversity, education, health, and employment.
Amanda Williams, CIOB’s Head of Environmental Sustainability and co-author of the report, said: “By working with this group of senior construction leaders, we have been able to gather valuable insights and case studies demonstrating how built environment companies are engaging with the SDGs, as well as a good appreciation of the opportunities and challenges.
“The report is valuable in its own right, but it will also inform the work we take forward to support our members in using the SDGs as a framework for being more innovative and sustainable. Time is running out to deliver on these goals, so we must accelerate action now.”
