Industrial AI infrastructure specialist Context Labs B.V. has announced three interconnected transactions with global commodities trader Trafigura PTE Ltd, marking a significant step forward in integrating carbon metrics directly into commercial trading operations.
As part of the agreement, Context Labs has acquired Agora (Europe) Limited, the Trafigura subsidiary behind the Kinertic carbon-intelligence platform. In tandem, Trafigura has completed a strategic equity investment in Context Labs and entered into a multi-year master services and platform license agreement to roll out the unified technology across its commodity trading desks.
The integration of Kinertic into Context Labs’ AI suite allows traders to view price, volume, logistics, and verified carbon intensity within a single environment. The transaction comes at a critical juncture for energy markets, as regulatory frameworks such as the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and the EU Methane Regulation make trade-specific emissions data an essential requirement for market access and risk management.
Dan Harple, Founder and CEO of Context Labs, stated that the opportunity lay not in generating more data, but in bringing context to the data customers already possessed. He noted that by bringing Kinertic together with Context Labs AI and their asset-grade data infrastructure, they turn fragmented inputs into connected, verifiable knowledge, ensuring every output is traceable to source, reproducible in process, and credible to inform pricing, manage risk, and guide capital allocation.
Highlighting the shifting landscape of global trade, Hannah Hauman, Global Head of Carbon Trading at Trafigura, remarked that carbon was now a core dimension of market risk and opportunity. She explained that traders required the same level of accuracy on emissions as they had on price and logistics, adding that Trafigura had been privileged to support Kinertic’s evolution into an industry-leading carbon reporting and analytics platform since inception, and expressed confidence that Context Labs would build on that foundation to drive continued growth.
Pelle Sommansson, CEO and Co-founder of Kinertic, emphasised the strategic impact of the merger, noting that the combination was about moving carbon from a reporting exercise into a core market signal. He added that together with Context Labs, they were enabling a new level of transparency, where carbon intensity becomes a trusted, measurable attribute in how energy is valued and traded.
By linking operational, third-party, and certification data into a single emissions layer, the combined platform provides commodity producers, traders, and financiers with auditable, trade-specific carbon metrics tailored for compliance and carbon-informed deal structuring.
