Crédit Agricole CIB leads $3.5bn green data centre financing in Malaysia

DayOne Data Centers has secured MYR15 billion (US$3.5 billion) in dual-tranche financing to support the development of sustainable data centre infrastructure in Johor, Malaysia. The transaction is one of the largest syndicated data centre financings in Asia and the biggest green data centre funding in Malaysia to date.

The Singapore-based operator’s funding package comprises MYR7.5 billion in Murabaha Islamic financing and a US$1.7 billion offshore term loan facility. The deal drew significant demand from both domestic and international lenders, with the facility oversubscribed by a factor of two. The proceeds will be used for refinancing and capital expenditure for data centres targeting Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification.

The anchor data centre sites will be located at Nusajaya and Kempas Tech Parks in Johor, aligning with ongoing investments in the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone. Johor is emerging as a major data centre hub in Southeast Asia, expected to account for 60% of Malaysia’s total data centre capacity by 2030. The rise in artificial intelligence applications is driving growing demand for digital infrastructure in the region.

Crédit Agricole CIB acted as Mandated Lead Arranger, Bookrunner, Underwriter, and Joint Coordinator for the USD tranche. The bank played a key role in structuring the transaction and mobilising a broad pool of liquidity.

“Leveraging our sector expertise and sustainable finance capability, we are pleased to have delivered a landmark financing solution that aligns with DayOne’s growth ambitions and sustainability goals,” said Jasmine Zhang, Head of Telecom Finance for Asia-Pacific at Crédit Agricole CIB. “The strong investor appetite also reflects confidence in Malaysia’s emergence as a regional data centre powerhouse.”

James Koh, Head of Corporate Coverage for Singapore and Southeast Asia, added: “We are delighted to have played a key role on this landmark transaction. As DayOne continues to expand its footprint, we look forward to strengthening our collaboration and contributing to its growth and sustainability roadmap in the region.”
