DHL and CMA CGM deploy biofuel to cut ocean freight emissions

DHL Global Forwarding and CMA CGM have agreed to jointly use 8,990 metric tonnes of second-generation biofuel to reduce emissions from global container transport.

The biofuel, UCOME derived from waste and residue feedstocks, will be used for ocean freight transported under DHL’s GoGreen Plus service. The companies estimate the initiative will deliver around 25,000 metric tonnes of CO₂e emissions reductions on a well-to-wake basis.

Casper Ellerbaek, Head of Global Ocean Freight at DHL Global Forwarding, said the collaboration supports efforts to lower emissions across international supply chains through increased use of sustainable marine fuels.

Under the agreement, CMA CGM will physically bunker the biofuel across its fleet, while the resulting emissions reductions will be allocated to DHL shipments through a Book & Claim approach. DHL said GoGreen Plus allows customers to reduce well-to-wake greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% compared with conventional marine fuels, depending on the fuel pathway.

Olivier Nivoix, Executive Vice President Shipping at CMA CGM Group, said the partnership demonstrates how collaboration can accelerate the shift towards lower-carbon shipping. He added that CMA CGM has reduced the carbon intensity of its shipping activities by 57% since 2008 and continues to invest in alternative fuels and dual-fuel vessels as part of its Net Zero Carbon by 2050 target.

Both companies said they will continue to explore opportunities to scale lower-carbon fuel use and strengthen joint approaches to decarbonising global supply chains.
