DHL Group signs 10-year offshore wind energy deal with EnBW

DHL Group has entered into a decade-long power purchase agreement (PPA) with German utility EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg for approximately 80 gigawatt-hours of renewable electricity annually, beginning in 2026. The agreement will cover around 16% of DHL’s current annual electricity consumption in Germany.

The renewable energy will be sourced from the He Dreiht offshore wind farm in the German North Sea, which is expected to become operational in phases by spring 2026. The wind farm, with a total installed capacity of 960MW, is among the largest in Europe and one of the first to be constructed without government subsidies. Once operational, it will generate enough electricity to supply roughly 1.1 million households.

Anna Spinelli, Chief Procurement Officer at DHL Group, said the agreement is a significant step towards achieving the company’s target of net-zero logistics-related emissions by 2050. “Smart energy management is key to achieving our decarbonisation goals,” she stated, highlighting that long-term partnerships such as this support both operational needs and broader energy transition efforts.

As part of its Strategy 2030, DHL is aiming to establish itself as the leading green logistics provider. The strategy includes increasing the use of renewable energy, sustainable fuels, electric vehicles, climate-neutral buildings, and green logistics products.

EnBW’s Executive Director of Trading, Matthias Obert, noted that PPAs are instrumental in supporting both industrial decarbonisation and project financing. “This partnership underscores our position as a major provider of sustainable energy across Europe,” he said.

The deal reinforces DHL’s commitment to integrating sustainability across its supply chain operations and signals growing corporate demand for long-term renewable energy solutions in the logistics sector.
