Drax launches digital Biomass Tracker to boost supply chain transparency

UK power generator Drax has launched a new digital Biomass Tracker designed to improve transparency across its global woody biomass supply chain.

The interactive tool provides visibility on where Drax sources its biomass, including countries and US states of origin, the types of fibre used, transport routes and the carbon emissions associated with each stage of the supply chain. It also includes information on independent sustainability certifications, aimed at strengthening accountability across the biomass sector.

Using quarterly real-world data, the Biomass Tracker presents information through an interactive Sankey diagram, enabling users to follow biomass from fibre origin and pellet production through transport, storage and final use at Drax Power Station or by third-party customers.

Miguel Veiga-Pestana, Chief Sustainability Officer at Drax, said the launch marks a further step in delivering the company’s Sustainability Framework commitments. He added that transparency and data-led reporting are critical to building trust in sustainable biomass and supporting the UK’s energy security.

The launch supports Drax’s Sustainability Framework, introduced in February 2025, and reflects the company’s focus on strengthening sustainability reporting through data and digital innovation, while demonstrating responsible sourcing across the biomass supply chain.

The Biomass Tracker is now available on the Drax website, with further updates planned as new data and functionality are added.
