EDP signs 20-year solar power agreement with Amazon in Japan

Portuguese energy company EDP Energias de Portugal has signed a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Amazon for the output of a 44-megawatt-peak (MWp) solar power plant currently under construction in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan.

The agreement was finalised through EDP Renewables APAC, the regional subsidiary of EDP Renewables, the company announced today. The utility-scale solar farm is expected to become operational by the third quarter of 2025. It will feature 63,000 solar panels and is projected to generate over 48 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of clean electricity annually. This output will contribute to reducing carbon emissions by more than 20,500 metric tonnes per year, supporting Japan’s decarbonisation efforts and Amazon’s renewable energy targets.

This marks the second renewable energy PPA between EDP and Amazon in the Asia-Pacific region, following a similar agreement signed in 2021. The collaboration reflects both companies’ commitment to expanding clean energy capacity and contributing to the global transition to net-zero emissions.
