Enbridge Inc. is expanding its renewable energy portfolio with a US$900 million solar project in Texas that will supply electricity exclusively to Meta Platforms Inc.’s data centre operations.
The Calgary-based energy firm, traditionally known for its oil pipeline infrastructure, announced on Tuesday that construction has begun on the 600-megawatt Clear Fork solar facility near San Antonio. The project is expected to begin operations in the summer of 2027.
“Clear Fork demonstrates the growing demand for renewable power across North America from blue-chip companies who are involved in technology and data centre operations,” said Matthew Akman, president of Enbridge’s power business.
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, has signed a long-term agreement to purchase the entire renewable output of the project. Data centres, which support technologies such as artificial intelligence, require substantial electricity to operate and cool servers, leading tech companies to strike exclusive clean energy supply deals.
“We are thrilled to partner with Enbridge to bring new renewable energy to Texas and help support our operations with 100 per cent clean energy,” said Urvi Parekh, Meta’s head of global energy.
Enbridge has invested more than US$8 billion in renewable energy since 2002, developing 23 wind farms, 13 solar installations and one geothermal project—altogether generating enough electricity to power approximately 1.3 million homes. The Clear Fork project adds to this growing portfolio as the company continues to transition toward low-carbon energy under a commercial model designed to deliver stable returns.
