Formula E reinstates high-powered “pit boost” feature ahead of London E‑Prix

The ABB FIA Formula E Championship has announced the return of its innovative Pit Boost system for this weekend’s London double-header. Originating in Berlin and now a key feature in Season 11, Pit Boost delivers a 600 kW mid-race jolt—equivalent to a 10% energy top-up—via rapid-charging rigs in the pit lane.

Each driver is mandated to enter the Pit Boost phase once per race, plugging into a single team-supplied charging unit for 30 seconds. The full stop—including charging time—must last at least 34 seconds. Strategists must balance energy reserves carefully, as drivers may only activate Pit Boost when their battery state of charge is between 40% and 60%.

Fortescue Zero, the series’ official provider, underscores the system’s dual purpose: to add a tactical layer to races and to demonstrate ultra-fast EV charging technology—delivering in 30 seconds as much power as some public superchargers could take minutes to provide.

Pit Boost joins the established Attack Mode, returning this season as another strategic on-track power option. With Attack Mode granting a temporary 50 kW boost, races now feature multiple high-stakes opportunities for overtakes and position changes.

As the London E-Prix begins, teams and constructors must integrate Pit Boost into their energy and tyre strategies. The feature not only promises to shake up race dynamics but reinforces Formula E’s mission to push EV tech from track to real world.
