Gentari and AWS sign 80MW wind power agreement in India

Gentari has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Amazon Web Services (AWS) for an 80MW wind power project in Tamil Nadu, India, marking a step forward in their 2023 collaboration on large-scale renewable energy development.

Scheduled to begin operations in mid-2027, the project is expected to generate around 300,000MWh of electricity annually. It will contribute to Gentari’s strategy of delivering cost-effective, utility-scale renewable energy while supporting AWS’s target of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

The agreement was formalised at a document exchange ceremony attended by senior representatives from both companies and Petronas, Gentari’s parent company. Gentari was represented by Chief Renewables Officer Low Kian Min, while AWS was represented by Jeff Johnson, Managing Director for ASEAN. The ceremony was witnessed by Tengku Muhammad Taufik, Chairman of Gentari and President and Group CEO of Petronas; Sushil Purohit, CEO of Gentari; Uwem Ukpong, Vice President of Global Services at AWS; and Ir Ts Mohd Yusri Mohamed Yusof, Senior Vice President of Projects, Technology and Health, Safety, Security & Environment at Petronas.

“This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to advancing practical, scalable, and clean energy solutions – vital for Asia and the world’s move towards a low-carbon future,” said Purohit. “Through projects like the Karur wind development, we are addressing real energy needs where it matters most.”

Johnson said AWS’s position as the world’s largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy underlined its commitment to environmental goals. “Our collaboration with Gentari, a Malaysian clean energy leader expanding its regional impact, brings us a step closer towards [net zero],” he said.

The Tamil Nadu project forms part of the broader Karur Wind Development zone, which hosts several major renewable projects and transmission infrastructure designed to support large-scale integration of wind power into the grid.
