General Motors (GM) has signed a 15-year renewable energy purchase agreement with NorthStar Clean Energy for three of its assembly plants.
NorthStar’s Newport Solar project, located in Newport, Arkansas, will provide renewable energy to power GM’s Lansing Delta Township Assembly and Lansing Grand River Assembly in Michigan, as well as the Wentzville Assembly site in Missouri. With a capacity of 180 megawatts, the Newport project will contribute clean energy directly to the grid that GM sources from. NorthStar Clean Energy is a division of CMS Energy.
This agreement marks GM’s largest power purchase deal to date. In 2022, GM announced the completion of energy-sourcing agreements to ensure that all their US facilities will be powered entirely by renewable electricity by the end of 2025.
The Newport facility generates enough electricity to power 30,000 homes annually.

With sourcing agreements now in place from 17 renewable energy plants across 11 states, GM has become the automotive industry’s largest buyer of renewable power by capacity.
