Gold Standard and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support corporate decarbonisation efforts in Tokyo through a new collaboration.
Under the agreement, Gold Standard Verified Emission Reductions (GSVERs) will be incorporated into a newly launched carbon credit trading platform by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. This initiative, aligned with the Zero Emission Tokyo Strategy, aims to make high-integrity carbon credits more accessible to Tokyo-based companies, addressing challenges such as language barriers.
As part of the collaboration, both parties will work together on capacity-building initiatives to enhance corporate understanding of carbon markets and ambitious climate strategies. A series of seminars and workshops will be organised to help businesses in Tokyo implement robust sustainability practices.
Margaret Kim, CEO of Gold Standard, emphasised Tokyo’s critical role in global decarbonisation efforts. “As the world’s largest city, Tokyo has a crucial role to play in global decarbonisation efforts. We are proud to support the Tokyo Metropolitan Government in its Zero Emission Tokyo Strategy by ensuring companies have access to credible carbon credits and the knowledge to implement impactful climate action,” she said.
“This journey requires ambitious action and investment from the private sector, both within and beyond their value chains. If we are to address the climate crisis, we need all cities to take this path. I know that our shared commitment to integrity will be a guiding force for this partnership in the years ahead,” she added.
The MoU was signed in Tokyo by Margaret Kim and Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike. Following the signing, Kim will deliver remarks at a forum on 12 March, attended by Tokyo-based businesses, to highlight the significance of the partnership in advancing the city’s sustainability goals.
Gold Standard, established over two decades ago, is committed to ensuring that carbon credits uphold the highest environmental integrity and generate positive impacts for both people and nature worldwide.
