Google has unveiled five sustainability initiatives across India, utilising artificial intelligence and digital technology to address climate challenges in agriculture, clean energy, and green workforce development.
The commitments expand Google’s operations across India, targeting Scope 3 supply chain decarbonisation, climate-smart agriculture, and local research infrastructure.
Key operational details across the five initiatives include:
- Solar API Expansion for Indian Homes: Google’s Earth AI-powered Solar API now provides rooftop solar potential insights for 300 million rooftops across India. Domestic platforms Solar Ladder and OpenSolar are integrating this dataset into software workflows to generate automated remote property assessments, cutting time and physical survey costs for solar installers.
- 150 MW Clean Energy Deal with ReNew Power: Google has signed a long-term agreement with ReNew Power to procure environmental attribute certificates (EACs) from a new 150-megawatt solar facility in Rajasthan. The transaction marks Google’s second Scope 3-focused solar deal in India, bringing total new solar capacity added through these partnerships to 300 MW.
- Methane Reduction Project in Rice Farming: Partnering with Mitti Labs, Google is supporting the deployment of Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) farming techniques across rice paddies in Telangana. The initiative uses NASA satellite data for remote verification and aims to avoid approximately 1 million tonnes of CO2e measured over a 100-year period (GWP100), or 3 million tonnes measured on a 20-year GWP scale.
- Expansion of Climate Technology Center: Formed alongside the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, the Google Center for Climate Technology awarded initial grants to three projects focused on green workforce training and low-carbon construction materials. The Center is opening new research tracks covering water stewardship and waste circularity.
- Climate Tech Startup Cohort: Four Indian startups—Terrastack, Varaha Climate, Farmers for Forests, and Climitra Carbon—have joined the inaugural Google DeepMind Accelerator: AI for the Planet cohort to scale drone, satellite, and Geo-AI applications for land intelligence and agroforestry.
