Google launches free energy assessment tool to aid manufacturers’ sustainability efforts

Google has introduced a new, no-cost tool designed to help manufacturing facilities identify energy-saving opportunities and reduce both costs and carbon emissions. The initiative, published in November 2025, targets facility managers and sustainability leads within manufacturing companies.

The tool—developed by Google’s sustainability team—is a self-service platform enabling users to conduct preliminary energy assessments without needing specialist expertise or expensive consulting services. By inputting basic facility data, users can generate customised recommendations across more than 20 systems—including air compressors, boilers, chillers and lighting—and analyse potential savings from equipment upgrades, operational changes or even solar installations.

Supporting portfolio-wide management, the tool allows companies to compare multiple sites and prioritise investments for maximum cost and carbon reduction. Collaboration is built into the platform, enabling teams to work together and invite upstream suppliers to participate—extending the benefits throughout the value chain.

Google emphasises that the tool’s assessments reflect the standards of an ASHRAE Level 1 energy audit, underpinned by engineering-firm data and calculation methodologies. Acknowledging global demand, the platform is available in English, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Thai and Vietnamese. User-data security is maintained via third-party hosting and privacy review.

“Manufacturers stand to unlock both meaningful cost savings and emissions reductions through energy efficiency improvements. But the path to savings is often blocked,” said Google’s Mischa Weiss-Lijn, Group Product Manager and Alan Deng, Supplier Engagement Manager in an article about the initiative — citing consultant costs, investment hurdles and in-house expertise gaps as key obstacles.

By making advanced, data-driven energy assessments accessible to manufacturing operations of all sizes, Google aims to accelerate industry-wide progress towards a more resilient and sustainable supply chain.
