To mark World Water Day 2026, Google has released its latest water stewardship figures, revealing that the company replenished more than 7 billion gallons of freshwater in 2025 alone. The update follows Google’s 2030 commitment to replenish 120% of the freshwater it consumes across its global offices and data centres, with a specific focus on improving watershed health in high-stress regions.
The tech giant’s 2025 portfolio includes 165 projects spanning 97 watersheds across five continents. Projections indicate that once these initiatives are fully implemented, they will collectively replenish more than 19 billion gallons of water annually by 2030. These efforts combine nature-based solutions, such as peatland restoration in Ireland, with advanced artificial intelligence and IoT technologies to optimise water use in both agriculture and urban infrastructure.
In the Colorado River Basin, Google has partnered with the Gila River Indian Community to deploy smart sensors designed to conserve water and maintain levels in Lake Mead. Similar AI-driven collaborations in Brazil’s Tietê Basin are being used to optimise irrigation timing, while in Indiana, partnerships with The Nature Conservancy are incentivising farmers to use cover crops to improve soil water retention.
Ecosystem restoration remains a cornerstone of the strategy. Key 2025 projects include:
- Ireland: Restoring bogs in the Wicklow Mountains to enhance biodiversity and reduce flood risks.
- California: Reconnecting the Tuolumne River to its floodplains to support native Chinook salmon and steelhead trout habitats.
- Taiwan: Implementing a natural gravel filtering system in the Touqian River to remove pollutants and improve water quality.
Google is also investing in digital solutions for growing cities. In Mons, Belgium, the company is supporting IoT leak detection across 240 public buildings. Meanwhile, in Bengaluru, India, an AI-powered “Water Intelligence Suite” has been deployed in schools to identify system inefficiencies and educate students on responsible water management.
