GRI and CDP unveil new mapping tool to streamline climate and energy reporting

In a major step toward improving coherence and efficiency in global sustainability disclosure, the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and CDP have jointly released a new GRI–CDP mapping resource that aligns CDP’s 2025 corporate questionnaire with the GRI Climate Change and Energy Standards (2025).

The new mapping aims to help organisations enhance data quality, reduce duplication, and strengthen the consistency of environmental reporting. It builds on the collaboration between GRI and CDP formalised under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in 2023, reflecting the two organisations’ shared ambition to simplify and standardise global environmental disclosure.

By identifying where the GRI 102: Climate Change 2025 and GRI 103: Energy 2025 standards converge with CDP’s environmental datapoints, the resource allows companies to adopt a “write once, read many” approach — using the same datasets across both frameworks. This alignment helps reduce the reporting burden while ensuring that disclosed data is useful, comparable, and high quality.

The mapping is the latest milestone in the GRI–CDP partnership and directly responds to feedback from reporting organisations seeking clearer guidance to align their disclosures under multiple frameworks. It is expected to play a key role in supporting companies as sustainability reporting continues to expand globally.

Harold Pauwels, GRI’s Director of Standards said,“We’re pleased to launch this mapping with CDP – an important step towards more consistent and effective environmental disclosure. Through CDP, and with the support of this new tool, companies can report GRI-aligned data directly to stakeholders and the global market, easing the reporting burden while strengthening access to high-quality, comparable information.”

Amir Sokolowski, Director of Climate at CDP said, “By improving alignment and enhancing transparency, we can help turn data into action and accelerate the transition to an economy that works for people and the planet.”

The mapping will be officially presented during a joint webinar, “Unlocking Synergies to Streamline Climate Disclosure,” on 28 October 2025 (10:00 CEST). The free session will guide participants through the mapping’s structure, demonstrate its role in supporting consistent climate and energy reporting, and feature experts from both organisations.

GRI is the creator of the world’s most widely used sustainability reporting standards, providing a global language for organisations to measure and communicate their impacts on the economy, environment, and society. CDP operates the world’s largest independent environmental disclosure system, with more than 24,800 companies representing over two-thirds of global market capitalisation reporting through its platform in 2024. Meanwhile, over 14,000 organisations worldwide use the GRI Standards to report their sustainability performance.
