GRI re-establishes presence in Vietnam to boost data-driven ESG reporting

Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) has launched a strategic programme in Vietnam aimed at bolstering sustainability reporting across the nation’s rapidly expanding economy. Supported by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), the initiative marks GRI’s re-establishment in the country, focusing on helping businesses of all sizes unlock the benefits of data-driven environmental, social, and governance (ESG) insights.

The programme’s primary objective is to build reporting capacity through high-level partnerships and policy engagement. Throughout 2026, GRI will collaborate with business associations, listed firms, and sustainability leaders via national forums and stock exchange events to improve the collection and use of ESG data.

A significant milestone for the year is the introduction of the Sustainability Twin transition And Reporting (STAR) Accelerator Programme. Developed in tandem with the Ministry of Finance’s Agency for Private Enterprise and Corporative Development (APED), the scheme is designed to provide small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with practical tools and guidance. This support is intended to help the “backbone of the economy” gain better access to global markets and sustainable finance.

The programme will be led by Country Manager Bao Nguyen, who previously managed GRI’s Vietnam operations from 2017 to 2020. With a decade of experience as Vice-Chair of the Vietnam Business Council for Sustainable Development, Nguyen brings a wealth of expertise in navigating the intersection of corporate leadership, government policy, and civil society.

As one of Asia’s fastest-growing economies, Vietnam’s role in global value chains is becoming increasingly pivotal. “Demand for credible sustainability reporting is rising from both global stakeholders and domestic regulators,” the organisation noted, highlighting that more companies are adopting GRI’s globally recognised standards to enhance their long-term competitiveness and resilience.
