HKEX launches voluntary green equity designation programme

Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) has officially launched HKEX Green Equity, a voluntary designation framework designed to enhance visibility for Hong Kong-listed companies with substantial green business activities.

The initiative provides a transparent framework and an independent review process to assist institutional and retail investors in identifying companies making direct contributions to the low-carbon transition. Aligning with globally recognised frameworks, the programme also aims to promote the broader adoption of the Hong Kong Taxonomy for Sustainable Finance across international capital markets.

To secure the HKEX Green Equity designation, applicant companies must undergo an evaluation by independent Recognised Reviewers in accordance with the HKEX Green Equity Framework. Qualifying issuers will be awarded the official designation mark, subject to ongoing regulatory compliance and annual reassessments.

Paul Chow, Group General Counsel and Group Chief Sustainability Officer at HKEX, stated that rising global demand for sustainable investment opportunities underscores the need for credible, transparent mechanisms to identify green market participants. He added that the designation will strengthen corporate visibility, support informed capital allocation, and reinforce Hong Kong’s positioning as a primary international sustainable finance hub.

The new designation expands HKEX’s existing suite of sustainability services, which includes climate disclosure guidelines, carbon credit trading, and Green Electricity Certificates (GECs) available through its Core Climate platform.
