INC unveils world’s first sustainability certification for the nut and dried fruit sector

The International Nut and Dried Fruit Council (INC) has unveiled the world’s first Sustainability Certification tailored specifically for the nut and dried fruit sector.

INC Executive Director Goretti Guasch said the certification represents a strategic step forward for the sector. “For the nut and dried fruit industry and the INC, sustainability is a strategic priority. While many existing certifications include sustainability components, none have been tailored to address the unique characteristics and challenges of this industry. This certification has been created by the industry, for the industry,” she said.

The INC Sustainability Certification provides a structured framework for companies to align with best practices and verified sustainability standards across environmental, social, and governance (ESG) pillars. It recognises achievements already made by producers while driving further progress across the global supply chain.

Industry leaders at the launch highlighted the certification’s relevance for growers, processors, and exporters. Many nut and dried fruit producers—often multigenerational family farms—have long used methods that protect soil, water, and biodiversity. The new certification builds on these foundations, embedding governance standards that ensure fair treatment of workers and suppliers, extending sustainable practices from farm to consumer.

With growing global demand for sustainably produced foods, including in major markets such as China, the certification offers practical guidance for both small and large businesses. It covers areas such as carbon footprint reduction, Zero Waste initiatives, and responsible use of agricultural inputs.

INC Chairman Ashok Krishen concluded: “In today’s world, sustainability is not a ‘nice to have’ — it is the right thing to do. We are proud to pioneer and advance sustainable practices, ensuring our industry continues to grow responsibly and sustainably into the future.”
