Infineon secures SBTi approval for ambitious emissions reduction targets

Infineon Technologies AG has received validation from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its near-term greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets, marking a significant step in the company’s ongoing decarbonisation strategy. The approved targets cover both direct operations (scope 1 and 2) and value chain emissions (scope 3), aligning with the Paris Agreement goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C.

The German semiconductor manufacturer has committed to reducing absolute scope 1 and 2 emissions by 72.5% by 2030, using 2019 as the base year. These emissions are linked to Infineon’s direct operations and energy consumption. For the first time, Infineon has also set a formal scope 3 target: by 2029, 72.5% of its suppliers—measured by emissions related to purchased goods, capital goods, and upstream logistics—will be required to adopt science-based targets.

“This validation is an important milestone in Infineon’s sustainability efforts,” said Elke Reichart, Member of the Management Board and Chief Digital and Sustainability Officer at Infineon. “A dedicated scope 3 target underlines our commitment to drive decarbonisation even further, in close collaboration with our suppliers.”

Infineon remains committed to achieving CO₂ neutrality for its scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030, a goal originally announced in 2020. The company continues to focus on voluntary emissions reductions, energy efficiency, and the use of renewable electricity to reduce its environmental impact. The SBTi—a collaboration between CDP, the UN Global Compact, WRI, and WWF—assesses and approves corporate climate targets that align with the latest climate science. Targets approved by the initiative are considered “science-based” if they are consistent with the aim of limiting global temperature rise to well below 2°C, and preferably to 1.5°C, above pre-industrial levels.
