LEGO Group breaks ground on Denmark’s largest solar park

The LEGO Group has commenced construction of its largest solar park to date in Billund, Denmark, marking a significant step in its global renewable energy strategy. Once operational, the facility is projected to generate enough renewable electricity to match 100% of the company’s total power consumption across its Billund operations.

The solar park will feature an installed capacity of 116 MW and a grid connection of 80 MW peak. It is estimated to produce roughly 99 GWh of clean electricity annually, with operations scheduled to begin in late 2027. This initiative will increase the company’s installed renewable capacity by 204% compared to 2025 levels, supporting its overarching target to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its entire value chain by 2050.

Annette Stube, Chief Sustainability Officer at the LEGO Group, stated that the Billund solar park represents an important milestone in expanding global renewable energy capacity while reducing emissions. She added that the project has been thoughtfully designed to support local biodiversity and provide a welcoming space for the community.

The design integrates 65 hectares of solar panels with 35 hectares dedicated to natural habitats, wetlands, and open landscapes to support local wildlife. Nesting boxes and bat habitats have already been installed alongside native planting. Furthermore, the surrounding nature areas will be open to the public, featuring a network of paths and boardwalks, whilst an existing transformer tower will be restored and converted into a local museum.
