Mass layoffs hit over 60,000 workers in Indonesia as companies struggle

More than 60,000 workers across 50 companies in Indonesia lost their jobs between January and February 2025, according to the Labour Party and the Indonesian Workers’ Confederation (KSPI).

KSPI President Said Iqbal revealed that 30 per cent of the affected companies, including the well-known textile manufacturer Sritex, have declared bankruptcy, highlighting the severity of the crisis.

The hardest-hit industries include textiles, garments, footwear, electronics, and automotive, as well as other labour-intensive sectors. “Over 60,000 people have lost their jobs, and this number is expected to rise to the hundreds of thousands in the coming months. This layoff crisis is very serious,” Said stated during a press conference.

Among the affected companies, PT Karya Mitra Budi Sentosa has dismissed 10,000 employees, while PT Danbi Internasional, PT New Era, and PT Yihong Novatex have each cut 2,000 jobs. Other firms, including PT Aditec Cakrawityata, PT Duta Cepat Pakar Perkasa, and PT Dupantex, have also implemented significant redundancies, with layoffs ranging from 500 to 1,500 workers.

Said urged the Indonesian government, particularly the Manpower Ministry, to intervene urgently by establishing a dedicated task force to address the crisis. “With government intervention, it is hoped that the wave of layoffs can be prevented and managed for the remainder of 2025,” he added.
