Westpac has appointed Michael Chen as its Deputy Chief Sustainability Officer. Chen, who joined the Australian banking and financial services group in 2021, has held a series of senior sustainability roles, including Head of Sustainable Finance, Head of Sustainability (Institutional), and most recently, Acting Chief Sustainability Officer.
Over the course of his career, Chen has built extensive experience across the sustainability sector. He has served as a steering committee member of the Net-Zero Banking Alliance, Group Sustainability Lead at insurance major IAG, and Senior Manager for Sustainability and Climate Change at PwC.
A Chartered Accountant by training, Chen also holds a Master’s degree in Sustainability Leadership from the University of Cambridge, further strengthening his credentials in corporate climate and ESG strategy.
His new role at Westpac places him at the forefront of the bank’s climate action and broader sustainability agenda at a time when Australian financial institutions are facing increasing pressure to align with global net-zero targets and mandatory disclosure requirements.
