MOL partners Isometric on carbon removal credits for net zero

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has entered into a strategic partnership with carbon removal registry Isometric to support its net zero strategy through the use of independently verified carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits.

Under the agreement, Isometric will issue carbon removal credits certified under the Isometric Standard to help MOL address residual emissions as it works towards its target of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The partnership includes Isometric’s appointment as the registry for MOL’s 10,000-tonne enhanced weathering offtake with Alt Carbon.

“High-quality carbon removal credits are a key part of MOL’s strategy to address residual emissions on the path to net zero. We are pleased to partner with Isometric to achieve this, underpinned by their rigorous and transparent approach to verification,” said Daisuke Fujihashi, general manager of the Carbon Solution Development Unit at MOL.

Isometric provides verification frameworks for a range of carbon removal pathways, with protocols covering 17 technologies including enhanced weathering, ocean alkalinity enhancement, biochar and reforestation. Six of these protocols have been approved by the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market to issue credits aligned with the Core Carbon Principles.

“This partnership underscores both the growing demand for transparent, scientifically rigorous carbon removal and Isometric’s position as the registry of choice in the Japanese market,” said Eamon Jubbawy, chief executive of Isometric. “MOL is setting the pace for decarbonisation strategies in the shipping sector, and we look forward to supporting them on their journey to net zero emissions.”

Earlier this year, Isometric launched Certify, a digital verification platform designed to enable monthly issuance of carbon removal credits, replacing the annual issuance cycles typical of legacy registries and providing project developers with more regular revenue streams.
