PepsiCo and Yara partner to decarbonise agriculture in Latin America

PepsiCo Latin America and crop nutrition firm Yara have entered into a long-term partnership aimed at reducing emissions across the food value chain in the region. The collaboration will initially focus on supplying sustainable crop nutrition solutions to potato farmers in Mexico, Colombia, Chile, and Argentina.

The agreement builds on a similar partnership signed in Europe last year, in which Yara committed to providing PepsiCo farmers with low-carbon fertilisers, agronomic advice, and precision farming tools. In Latin America, the initiative will centre on the use of Yara Climate Choice™ products—fertilisers with a lower carbon footprint produced through renewable ammonia or carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology.

The product mix will also include Yara’s conventional premium nitrate-based mineral fertilisers, which are manufactured using proprietary catalyst technology designed to reduce emissions. Depending on the formulation, these fertilisers can cut the carbon footprint per tonne of potatoes by between 20% and 40%.

Pedro Parenti, Senior Vice President of Yara Latin America, said: “The agreement demonstrates the value of our solutions for decarbonising agriculture and food production. With PepsiCo as an ally and leader on this path, we can protect the environment for both present and future generations.”

The collaboration supports Yara’s wider mission to feed the world responsibly while reducing environmental impact. Chrystel Monthean, Executive Vice President of Yara Americas, added: “By improving fertiliser efficiency and encouraging regenerative farming methods, we are not only cutting emissions but also boosting the sustainability of agricultural production.”

PepsiCo’s participation aligns with its “PepsiCo Positive” (pep+) sustainability agenda, which focuses on promoting regenerative agriculture, sustainable sourcing, and improved livelihoods for farmers.

“This collaboration agreement with Yara represents significant progress in our pep+ agenda,” said Paula Santilli, CEO of PepsiCo Latin America. “We believe that Positive Agriculture will be key to meeting the growing demand for food while protecting natural resources and enhancing human well-being.” The partnership aims to make sustainable practices economically viable for farmers, helping them manage transition costs and adopt more regenerative models of agriculture.
