Polestar reports 25% carbon reduction per car in latest sustainability update

Swedish electric carmaker Polestar (NASDAQ: PSNY) has reported a 24.7% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions per vehicle sold since 2020, according to its fourth Annual Sustainability Report. The company attributes the decline to increased use of low-carbon aluminium, enhanced battery manufacturing processes, a shift to 100% renewable electricity in production, and greater reliance on biofuels in maritime logistics.

Chief Executive Michael Lohscheller underscored the firm’s commitment to sustainability despite broader global challenges. “Polestar has shown that it is possible to decouple growth from climate impact. Even though much in the world seems to be going in the wrong direction, we are doubling down on our commitments. When the world zigs, Polestar zags,” he said.

The company’s ambitious Polestar 0 project, launched in 2021, aims to develop a truly climate-neutral car by 2040. In its latest phase, the project has revealed that initiatives across partner companies have collectively identified low-carbon pathways with the potential to lower the carbon footprint of a Polestar 2 by 10 tonnes.

A significant share of emissions reductions has come from innovations in aluminium and steel production—materials that account for around 45% of the Polestar 2’s cradle-to-gate carbon footprint. The next stage of the Polestar 0 project will involve a transition towards deeper research through the newly launched Mission 0 House in Gothenburg, a collaborative research facility bringing together academic scientists and industrial engineers to develop scalable low-emission technologies.

In addition to decarbonisation, the report emphasises Polestar’s focus on circularity, inclusion, and transparency. The company joined the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA), expanded its audit operations in high-risk mining regions, and increased traceability efforts to include materials such as manganese. The Polestar 4 now contains 10% recycled content, demonstrating progress towards material circularity across new models.

Polestar’s latest disclosures highlight its strategy of integrating environmental integrity with commercial growth, reinforcing its ambition to lead in sustainable mobility.
