SAP and Climeworks partner on long-term carbon removal agreement

SAP and Climeworks have entered a multi-year agreement to advance decarbonisation efforts, with SAP securing 37,000 tonnes of high-quality carbon removal credits from Climeworks. The carbon removal will take place through a combination of Direct Air Capture, biochar, and enhanced rock weathering technologies, with deliveries scheduled through 2034.

The agreement reflects SAP’s approach to addressing residual emissions in line with the Science-Based Targets initiative’s Corporate Net-Zero Standard. The portfolio diversification also aims to reduce exposure to carbon credit price volatility and strengthen SAP’s position in climate risk management.

Sophia Mendelsohn, SAP’s Chief Sustainability & Commercial Officer, said: “Investing in quality carbon removals addresses emissions we can’t eliminate directly. Our Climeworks partnership secures high-integrity capacity at preferred rates while protecting against price volatility. This investment also strengthens SAP economically—we can now develop new products that meet evolving customer, partner, and regulatory expectations.”

The collaboration extends beyond carbon credits, with SAP and Climeworks initiating a co-development process to explore new enterprise solutions for managing corporate carbon removal strategies. These tools, integrated into SAP’s existing platforms such as the SAP Sustainability Control Tower, aim to provide businesses with centralised systems to measure and manage emissions reductions.

Climeworks has also adopted SAP technologies, including SAP S/4HANA Public Cloud and SAP LeanIX, to support its scaling efforts. The adoption is part of its operational strategy to build a compliant and financially transparent platform as the company expands its carbon removal infrastructure.

Christoph Gebald, Climeworks co-founder and co-CEO, stated: “Climeworks and SAP share the belief that sustainability is a core element of business strategy. Through this partnership, we are embedding carbon removal into enterprise technology, making it actionable for businesses worldwide.”

As SAP increases its focus on sustainability solutions and climate-related services, the alliance signals growing corporate demand for integrated, data-driven approaches to climate mitigation.
