The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has published a draft Power Sector Net-Zero Standard, setting out a dedicated framework for companies across power generation, transmission, storage, trade and retail. The draft replaces the existing Quick Start Guide for Electric Utilities and introduces new sector-specific criteria, pathways, metrics and calculation rules, alongside a tool to help companies set science-based targets.
Designed to support one of the world’s highest-emitting industries — responsible for nearly 40% of global energy-related CO₂ emissions — the draft seeks to provide power companies with a practical and scientifically robust approach to align with net-zero goals by 2050. Supporting documents include an executive summary, target-setting tool and synthesis reports.
The SBTi said the release is part of its wider effort to ensure corporates establish credible, transparent and science-aligned targets for both the near and long term. Development has been supported by Mott MacDonald and an Expert Advisory Group.
Stakeholders including corporates, academics and nonprofits are now invited to review the draft and submit feedback through an online survey. The consultation will remain open until 3 November 2025, with responses feeding into revisions ahead of pilot testing and the finalisation of the standard.
