Spain’s Moeve joins Shell’s blockchain platform to scale sustainable aviation fuel use

Spanish energy company Moeve has become the first external supplier of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to join Shell’s Avelia, a blockchain-based platform designed to accelerate the uptake of low-carbon fuels in aviation.

Launched in 2022 in partnership with Amex Global Business Travel and Accenture, Avelia operates a “book and claim” system that connects airlines, fuel producers, and corporate customers, allowing verified SAF use to be credited across the value chain. As of mid-2025, the platform had enabled over 41 million gallons of SAF use at 17 airports worldwide.

Moeve produces sustainable aviation fuel from used cooking oil at its La Rábida Energy Park in Spain and plans to expand its total production capacity to 800,000 metric tonnes per year by 2030.

The move comes as the aviation sector faces mounting pressure to cut carbon emissions, with SAF seen as one of the few viable near-term solutions. Yet, despite growing investment, supply remains limited. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) estimates that global SAF output will double in 2025 to reach 2 million tonnes, accounting for just 0.7% of airlines’ total fuel consumption.
