A 1.9 megawatt-peak (MWp) solar rooftop photovoltaic (PV) system has been commissioned at SteelAsia Manufacturing Corporation’s facility in Meycauayan, Bulacan, through a collaboration with TotalEnergies ENEOS. The installation aims to integrate renewable energy into steel production, a sector known for high energy consumption.

The system consists of over 3,200 solar modules, generating approximately 2,700 megawatt-hours (MWh) of electricity annually. It is expected to cut 2,300 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year, comparable to planting over 34,500 trees.

As part of a 10-year solar agreement, TotalEnergies ENEOS funded and installed the system and will operate it for the contract duration. SteelAsia will use the electricity generated without incurring upfront costs.

The initiative aligns with SteelAsia’s ongoing efforts to integrate renewable energy into its operations. Other facilities, including the Calaca green steel manufacturing plant and the Compostela, Cebu rolling mill, are already powered by geothermal energy.

SteelAsia President Andre Sy underscored the significance of the transition, stating: “Sustainability is at the core of our vision for the future of steel manufacturing. This solar project with TotalEnergies ENEOS is a crucial step in reducing our environmental impact while ensuring energy sufficiency across our operations.”

The steel sector requires substantial energy inputs, increasing the need for efficiency measures. Ingrid Jaumain, Zone Director of TotalEnergies ENEOS Renewables Philippines Project Corp., highlighted the importance of the project, stating:

“The steel industry is energy-intensive, and we understand the need for improved energy efficiency. We are delighted to be SteelAsia’s trusted partner for their first solar rooftop project, supporting them on their decarbonisation journey and contributing to the development of a sustainable steel industry in the Philippines.”

The project reflects wider efforts to introduce renewable energy solutions in industrial settings, contributing to emissions reductions and energy sustainability in steel production.
