Sungrow Hydrogen secures major role in China’s green hydrogen project

Sungrow Hydrogen has secured the largest share of a contract for hydrogen production equipment in China Coal Ordos Energy Chemical’s “100,000-ton Liquid Sunshine” Demonstration Project, a key national initiative aimed at advancing large-scale green hydrogen production. The company will supply 16 alkaline electrolysers, each with a capacity of 1,200 Nm³/h, alongside integrated gas-liquid separation and purification systems.

The $680 million project integrates renewable energy, hydrogen production, and energy storage to reduce emissions in coal-based industries. Key targets include:

  • 625 MW of wind and solar power capacity
  • 21,000 tonnes of green hydrogen production per year
  • 100,000 tonnes of methanol synthesis using CO₂ and green hydrogen
  • 500,000 tonnes of annual CO₂ emission reductions upon completion

Sungrow Hydrogen’s system is designed for continuous, stable operation while integrating with variable renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. The project will also validate large-scale green hydrogen-to-methanol conversion, offering a potential model for decarbonising high-emission sectors such as coal-based chemical production.

As industrial-scale green hydrogen adoption accelerates globally, multiple large-scale projects are progressing, signalling a shift from pilot demonstrations to commercial implementation.
