TotalEnergies launches largest solar power cluster in Europe

TotalEnergies has inaugurated its largest solar power facility in Europe, a cluster of five interconnected solar farms with a total capacity of 263 megawatts (MW) located near Seville, in southern Spain. The installation is expected to generate 515 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of renewable electricity annually—enough to power more than 150,000 Spanish households—while avoiding 245,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year.

The project, comprising 400,000 bifacial solar panels mounted on trackers, was declared of strategic interest by the regional government of Andalusia. Its construction has delivered a significant economic boost to the region, involving 14 companies—over half of them Sevillian—and creating 800 direct and indirect jobs.

The majority of the electricity will be sold through long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs), while the remainder will be traded on the wholesale market.

Olivier Jouny, Senior Vice President for Renewables at TotalEnergies, acknowledged the role of the Spanish government in advancing the project. “We warmly thank the Spanish authorities at both the regional and national levels for supporting this solar project that is contributing to Spain’s ambition of 80% renewables in its mix by 2030,” he said.

He added that with 1,700 employees in Spain and a growing customer base of over 2 million, TotalEnergies is focused on building an integrated power portfolio combining renewables and flexible gas-fired plants to deliver clean, firm electricity. The company is currently the fourth-largest provider of electricity, gas, and related services in the Spanish market.
