UN Tourism launches roadmap for Sustainable and Resilient Tourism Year 2027

UN Tourism has unveiled a new Road Map to guide preparations for the International Year of Sustainable and Resilient Tourism 2027, marking a key step in delivering its mandate from the United Nations General Assembly.

The Road Map, developed through a collaborative process, was welcomed by UN Tourism’s Committee on Tourism and Sustainability (CTS), which met in Madrid. The committee commended the organisation for reflecting Member States’ priorities and for the early momentum under its new leadership in building towards 2027.

UN Tourism Secretary-General Shaikha Al Nuwais said sustainability and resilience should be seen as an ongoing process rather than fixed end goals. She added that the International Year would enable UN Tourism to support Member States in positioning tourism as a transformative sector within the post-2030 global agenda.

William Rodríguez López, Chair of the Committee on Tourism and Sustainability and Costa Rica’s Minister of Tourism, said the International Year presents an opportunity to turn the sector’s recognised transformative potential into more coordinated and concrete action, including in areas such as climate action and long-term development planning.

The pathway to 2027 will be anchored within the Committee on Tourism and Sustainability, guided by a Steering Committee of Member States, informed by consultations through Regional Commission meetings, and endorsed by the Executive Council. The CTS, a subsidiary body of the Executive Council, is responsible for monitoring the implementation of UN Tourism’s programme of work on sustainable tourism.
