Uniper and NKT sign 10-year solar PPA in Germany

Uniper and NKT have signed a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) covering electricity from Uniper’s newly developed photovoltaic (PV) project in Wilhelmshaven (Germany), marking a further step in both companies’ decarbonisation strategies and their use of regionally sourced renewable energy.

The agreement relates to the Voslapper Groden solar park, built on the ash landfill of a former coal-fired power plant. The site has an installed capacity of 17.2 megawatt peak (MWp) and is expected to generate around 17,872 MWh of renewable electricity each year.

Under the ten-year physical PPA, NKT will purchase 100% of the forecast electricity output from the solar park, along with 100% of the associated Guarantees of Origin (GoOs). The renewable power will support NKT’s production facilities in Nordenham, close to the PV site, as well as its operations in Cologne.

Michael C. Hjorth, Chief Commercial Officer at NKT, said the agreement was a “natural next step” in the company’s efforts to decarbonise its operations. “By sourcing renewable electricity directly from a local solar power plant, we can reduce our environmental footprint while supporting regional renewable energy development,” he said, adding that long-term PPAs are increasingly seen as one of the most credible tools for supply-chain decarbonisation.

Iulia Tica, Chief Executive of Uniper Renewables, said the project demonstrated how regional renewable assets can directly support industrial decarbonisation. “We’re pleased to supply NKT with clean power from a site that symbolises real transformation,” she said.

Andreas Gemballa, Chief Commercial Officer at Uniper Energy Sales, highlighted the role of PPAs in providing long-term certainty for industry. “Power Purchase Agreements give our partners price stability and direct access to reliable energy from renewable sources, while accelerating the energy transition,” he said.

The target commercial operation date for the solar park is 31 January 2027, although commissioning may begin earlier if the site becomes operational ahead of schedule.
