Uniper signs long-term renewable ammonia offtake deal with AM Green

Uniper Global Commodities SE and AM Green Ammonia India Private Limited have signed a long-term, binding offtake agreement for renewable ammonia certified as a Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO).

Under the agreement, Uniper will offtake up to 500,000 tonnes per year of renewable ammonia from AM Green’s projects. The first shipment is expected as early as 2028 from AM Green’s 1 million-tonne-per-annum plant currently under construction in Kakinada.

Renewable ammonia is expected to play a role in reducing emissions in sectors such as chemicals, fertilisers and refining, and may also serve as a hydrogen carrier for European markets. The companies said they will work with certification bodies to ensure traceability and compliance with European RFNBO standards.

Michael Lewis, chief executive of Uniper, said: “This agreement with AM Green Ammonia is a key building block in our strategy to provide our customers with reliable access to renewable and low-carbon molecules at scale. Green ammonia stands out as one of the most promising solutions to decarbonise CO₂-intensive production of chemicals, fertilisers and, through green hydrogen, also in refining.”

Anil Kumar Chalamalasetty, founder of AM Green, said the project was designed to meet European compliance requirements and support emissions reductions across energy-intensive industries.

Mahesh Kolli, co-founder of AM Green, said: “Our partnership with Uniper reaffirms our ability to deliver low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia at scale, supported by focused collaboration and disciplined execution.”

The companies said the agreement supports the development of supply corridors for renewable molecules between India and Europe.
