World’s first verified enhanced weathering carbon removal credits issued

Isometric, a carbon registry platform, has issued 235.53 independently verified Enhanced Weathering (EW) carbon dioxide removal credits for InPlanet, marking the first such credits globally. These credits, secured by ClimeFi and delivered to Adyen, are based on rigorous monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) protocols.

Enhanced Weathering accelerates natural carbon removal by spreading crushed silicate rocks on farmland, enhancing the storage of carbon dioxide in oceans. InPlanet’s credits come from its Serra da Mantiqueira project in Brazil, which uses the region’s basalt deposits and tropical climate to boost the carbon sequestration process.

The credits were certified under Isometric’s Enhanced Weathering Protocol, which relies on direct measurements from soil and water, statistical analysis, and control testing to ensure accuracy. Verified data from the project will also be shared with Cascade Climate, a non-profit organisation, to support further research into EW models.

EW has numerous advantages. It is low cost, has immense storage potential in oceans and creates substantial co-benefits—including improved soil health, greater agricultural productivity and job creation in rural communities. This means it has the potential for massive scale, but—until now—EW has not been robustly tested in the field.

Isometric’s Registry provides a transparent record of all credits, enabling scrutiny and accountability. Each credit represents one tonne of carbon dioxide removed from the atmosphere.
