Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the launch of the AWS Sustainability console, a new standalone service designed to give organisations direct oversight of the environmental impact associated with their cloud usage. This free service represents a significant evolution of the existing Customer Carbon Footprint Tool (CCFT), specifically addressing a common operational barrier by allowing sustainability professionals to access critical emissions data without requiring sensitive billing permissions.
The new console provides estimated carbon emissions data across all AWS commercial regions, utilising both market-based and location-based methodology. Users can now dissect their environmental footprint by AWS Region, specific service, and emissions scope (1, 2, and 3), ensuring a granular understanding of their digital carbon impact.
Beyond simple data visibility, the AWS Sustainability console introduces a suite of advanced features tailored for corporate reporting. These include improved customisable visualisations, the ability to align data with specific fiscal year start months, and the generation of bespoke CSV reports. Crucially, the service offers API and SDK access, enabling businesses to integrate emissions data directly into their existing sustainability workflows and third-party reporting platforms.
Currently available in the US East (N. Virginia) region with global accessibility via the AWS Management Console, this launch simplifies the process for teams to verify their progress toward net-zero goals. By decoupling environmental data from financial access, AWS aims to empower the right stakeholders to take informed action on cloud-based decarbonisation.
