Anew Climate and Avenir have successfully executed their first joint liquefied biomethane (Bio-LNG) bunkering operation at the Port of Klaipėda, Lithuania. The milestone event took place at the KN Energies terminal, where Anew supplied certified waste-based Bio-LNG to the Avenir Ascension, a 7,500 cbm bunker vessel. The fuel was subsequently transported to Sweden for use by Destination Gotland, supporting the decarbonisation of passenger ferry services in the Baltic region.
This operation represents Anew’s inaugural Bio-LNG project in Europe, following a series of similar successes in North America. The Bio-LNG used is sourced from Anew’s diversified portfolio and is optimised for negative lifecycle carbon intensity. Crucially, the fuel is fully compatible with existing LNG infrastructure, allowing shipowners to meet stringent FuelEU Maritime and RED III requirements without requiring any mechanical modifications to their vessels.
The Avenir Ascension is part of Avenir’s specialised fleet, which performs over 200 operations annually across Northwest Europe. By merging Anew’s expertise in biomethane aggregation and certification with Avenir’s maritime logistics, the partnership offers a scalable, drop-in solution for operators facing increasing pressure from the EU ETS and IMO frameworks to reduce lifecycle emissions.
“Greening shipping is not a future ambition – it is happening today. By combining our expanding renewable gas network with Avenir’s maritime infrastructure, we are delivering robust, fully certified Bio‑LNG supply chains that are practical, flexibly accessible, and aligned with regulatory requirements. We are proud to launch our first initiative with Avenir as we expand our Bio-LNG offering globally,” said John Cosmo Dwelle, Managing Director at Anew Climate Europe.
Jonathan Quinn, Managing Director at Avenir added, “Bio-LNG plays a crucial role in reducing emissions from shipping today. This transaction with Anew strengthens our ability to deliver reliable, traceable Bio-LNG solutions, directly supporting our customers as they reduce emissions and progress on their decarbonization pathways.”
Henry Hammarström, Senior Energy and Climate Strategist and Head of Sales at Gotland Carbon Solutions said, “We are happy to see Bio-LNG delivered to our vessels through Anew Climate and Avenir. For 2026, we are increasing Destination Gotland’s use of Bio-LNG in order to support FuelEU Maritime compliance of vessels that need support to comply with the greenhouse gas criteria of the regulations through pooling.”
