Climeworks Solutions has published a whitepaper advocating for the systematic inclusion of carbon removal technology in the planning, financing, and construction of global artificial intelligence infrastructure.
The publication, titled Responsible AI Infrastructure Should Include Carbon Removal, highlights how the rapid growth of data centres, energy generation systems, building materials, and computing hardware is driving digital infrastructure expansion. While energy efficiency and renewable power remain foundational, the report notes that certain residual emissions throughout the construction and operational supply chain remain difficult to eliminate entirely.
To address these challenges, the whitepaper presents four practical frameworks for industry adoption: Regional Impact Portfolios to fund localized environmental projects; Ecosystem Co-Procurement to share credit responsibilities across hyperscalers, developers, and utilities; Natural Gas Transition Guardrails to couple carbon capture with durable removal where fossil fuels are used temporarily; and Build-Stage Neutralization to mitigate embodied emissions from materials and hardware during initial construction.
