Carbon Trade Exchange launches API to embed live carbon marketplace global access

Voluntary carbon market platform Carbon Trade Exchange (CTX) has launched its Exchange API Solution, allowing external software platforms, corporate buyers, and brokers to integrate directly with its live spot exchange.

The integration architecture offers authorised partners three main features: a real-time feed displaying available global carbon credit listings, a fee calculator providing exact costs prior to transaction execution, and programmatic trading capabilities that allow automated clearing, inventory adjustments, and settlement via single software requests.

Highlighting the structural shift for the business, Wayne Sharpe, Chief Executive Officer of Carbon Trade Exchange, stated: “This is one of the most significant infrastructure launches in CTX’s 18 year history. For years, the only way onto our exchange was through the CTX website. Today that changes. Any authorised partner — a retailer, a broker, a corporate sustainability platform — can now embed our entire marketplace inside their own product. We’re not just an exchange anymore; we’re a trading engine other companies can build on.”

CTX confirmed that the API solution is fully operational, with its core endpoints verified through initial retail partners and live transactions already cleared through the platform.

Security features for the interface include individually encrypted API keys, multi-factor authentication, customizable listing filters based on credit vintage or registry standards, and call-level tracking. The system draws from CTX’s central database, which includes credits certified across major frameworks—such as Verra VCS, Gold Standard, UNFCCC CDM, and the Global Carbon Registry—originating from more than 50 countries. Because the exchange holds carbon credits in escrow, external platforms can offer offset options directly to clients without purchasing or warehousing inventory in advance.

The technological release follows CTX passing the milestone of one billion tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent traded since its founding in 2008. The system is designed to allow corporate ESG platforms, e-commerce checkout systems, and brokerage firms to embed live carbon credit pricing and automated retirement features directly into their proprietary applications.

Emphasising the growth strategy behind the integration, Sharpe added: “Every integration partner is a new growth channel for CTX. An API key can be issued in minutes, and from that point on, every trade a partner clears through our API is real volume on our exchange. We built this to make CTX easier to plug into than any other carbon marketplace in the world.”
