Amazon has signed the largest corporate power purchase agreement (PPA) in German history, alongside announcing investments in four new wind energy projects in Sweden.
In Germany, the retail and technology conglomerate committed to purchasing 600 megawatts of carbon-free electricity from the Gennaker offshore wind farm, located roughly 15 kilometres off the coast of north-eastern Germany in the Baltic Sea. The long-term off-take agreement provides developer Skyborn Renewables with the financial backing required to advance into project construction. Once operational, the site is projected to generate sufficient power to meet the annual electricity demands of more than one million German homes.
Concurrently, Amazon expanded its Scandinavian energy portfolio by signing four new PPAs in Sweden. The additions bring its total carbon-free energy capacity in the country to nearly 1 GW across nine utility-scale wind projects—an output equivalent to powering more than 350,000 Swedish households annually.
Commenting on the Swedish additions, Gulfem Toygar, Country Manager for Amazon Sweden, stated: “The world needs more energy, and it needs that energy to be carbon-free, reliable, and affordable for everyone. Our wind energy investments in Sweden are part of how we’re helping to bring more carbon-free energy to the grid.”
