The Tantangan Solar Power Plant in South Cotabato, Philippines, has officially held its energisation ceremony, commencing commercial electricity generation less than a year after its groundbreaking.
With a capacity of 99 megawatt-peak (MWp), the facility represents one of Mindanao’s most significant clean energy developments. Developed by international solar firm ib vogt, the site integrates solar power generation with battery storage to deliver dispatchable, near-baseload electricity to a region facing structural supply deficits and grid reliability constraints.
Once fully operational, the plant is expected to generate over 150 GWh of clean electricity annually. This output will power more than 82,000 households while avoiding over 66,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year.
The project is the first to utilise funding from an USD 80 million joint Development and Construction Facility established by British International Investment (BII) and Singapore-based Pentagreen Capital.
Pentagreen Capital’s contribution forms part of its Green Investments Partnership under Singapore’s Financing Asia’s Transition Partnership (FAST-P) initiative. The facility’s mezzanine loan provided subordinated debt to complement senior commercial project financing, enabling ib vogt to complete construction within twelve months.
Marat Zapparov, Chief Executive Officer of Pentagreen Capital, stated that the project demonstrates how fit-for-purpose credit capital can accelerate high-quality renewable energy construction across ASEAN.
Rohit Anand, Managing Director and Head of Asia Infrastructure and Climate Direct Investments at BII, noted that the energisation aligns with the UK development finance institution’s strategy to mobilise private capital into Southeast Asian clean energy infrastructure.
David Ludwig, Chief Executive Officer of ib vogt APAC, highlighted that Tantangan is the firm’s first solar-and-storage hybrid in Southeast Asia. He added that it forms part of more than 500 MW of hybrid capacity that the developer expects to have operational or under construction across the Philippines by the end of 2026.
