Virgin Australia secures landmark sustainability-linked aircraft financing deal

Virgin Australia has secured a ground-breaking sustainability-linked debt facility to support its ongoing fleet modernisation and carbon reduction targets, marking one of the first general syndications of its kind in the Asia-Pacific aviation sector.

Four new aircraft under the facility have already been delivered, with full delivery expected by September. The new models deliver a 20% reduction in fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions compared to the aircraft they replace.

The transaction incorporates commercial terms tied directly to Virgin Australia’s predefined Sustainability Performance Targets (SPTs) for emissions reduction. To ensure market credibility, these targets have been benchmarked against the Transition Pathway Initiative’s below 2-degree pathway.

Crédit Agricole CIB acted in multiple key roles for the transaction, serving as Mandated Lead Arranger, Underwriter, Bookrunner, Sustainability Coordinator, as well as sole Agent and Security Trustee.

The agreement supports Virgin Australia’s broader goal, set in 2021, to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Beyond fleet updates, the airline’s decarbonisation strategy encompasses operational efficiency measures, ground emission reductions, enhanced waste management, and the exploration of alternative aviation fuels.

Patrick de Talancé, Senior Country Officer for Australia at Crédit Agricole CIB, noted that the bank was proud to structure the venture, highlighting the combination of its aircraft financing expertise with sustainable finance capabilities across the Pacific region.

Arnaud Cadilhon, Executive Director of the Aviation Group Asia Pacific at Crédit Agricole CIB, added that the transaction demonstrated seamless collaboration across the bank’s Aviation, Sustainable Investment Banking, Syndication, and Agency divisions to deliver long-term value for the carrier.
