Garanti BBVA issues $30m sustainable bond focused on climate adaptation and resilience

Garanti BBVA has successfully completed the issuance of a $30 million sustainable bond dedicated to climate adaptation and resilience projects under its international funding program.

Issued on 29 June with a tenor of 371 days, the bond stands as one of the inaugural sustainable finance transactions explicitly focused on climate resilience. Structured under the BBVA Sustainable Debt Financing Framework, the issuance allows the bank to expand its sustainable finance portfolio by introducing targeted funding mechanisms for climate-resilient infrastructure.

The capital raised through the $30 million issuance will be directed toward a range of environmental and municipal infrastructure projects, including:

  • Water management: Digitalisation and modernisation of water utilities, alongside climate-resilient water infrastructure.
  • Flood & disaster preparedness: Stormwater management, flood prevention networks, emergency early warning systems, and post-disaster reconstruction.
  • Urban infrastructure: Resilient urban regeneration projects, public infrastructure reinforcement, and general disaster-proofing measures.

The financed projects aim to enhance resource efficiency, safeguard critical infrastructure, and support long-term environmental sustainability.

Mahmut Akten, Country Manager of Garanti BBVA, emphasised that addressing the climate crisis requires structural adaptations alongside decarbonisation efforts. He noted that the financial sector must support the transformation of production systems, urban areas, and infrastructure to withstand changing climate conditions.

Akten highlighted that Garanti BBVA regards sustainable finance as a strategic mechanism to strengthen economic and societal resilience over the long term. He added that the capital will directly fund projects from flood prevention to water management, expressing gratitude to international investors for supporting the bank’s capital markets strategy and sustainability roadmap.
