Renewable energy developer RWE has officially commissioned its Serra Palino onshore wind farm in the Apulia region of southern Italy, achieving full commercial operation less than 12 months after breaking ground.
Located across the municipalities of Sant’Agata di Puglia and Candela within the province of Foggia, the facility features an installed capacity of 47.2 megawatts (MW). The farm is powered by eight 5.9 MW wind turbines, generating sufficient clean electricity to supply approximately 40,000 domestic households across Italy.
The rapid completion of the project strengthens RWE’s operating footprint in the Italian energy market, where the company manages an integrated portfolio covering the development, construction, operation, and marketing of onshore wind and solar assets. RWE currently operates 18 onshore wind farms, one utility-scale photovoltaic plant, and three agrivoltaic installations across Italy, representing a combined operational portfolio of roughly 670 MW that supplies power to over 550,000 households.
Key operational, geographical, and strategic metrics of the project include:
- Asset configuration: Eight high-capacity wind turbines delivering 5.9 MW per unit, achieving an aggregate site capacity of 47.2 MW.
- Rapid build out: Reached full commercial grid connection under a 12-month construction window.
- Domestic household coverage: Generates sufficient zero-emission electricity to cover the annual power demands of 40,000 Italian homes.
- Expansion pipeline: Adds to an active construction pipeline of approximately 200 MW of new solar and wind projects currently under development across the Italian peninsula.
Sopna Sury, Chief Executive Officer of RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, stated that completing the Serra Palino project within a year underscores the operational execution of the regional development teams. Sury added that RWE remains focused on expanding its local footprint, with 200 MW of additional clean power capacity actively under construction to support a resilient, competitive European energy grid.
