TotalEnergies partners with PETRONAS, SONANGOL, and Oil India to accelerate methane reduction

Energy major TotalEnergies has announced a series of strategic technical partnerships with National Oil Companies across Asia and Africa to accelerate the reduction of methane emissions across international upstream operations.

The announcements were made during a gathering of the Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter (OGDC) member companies in Abu Dhabi. TotalEnergies highlighted collaborative projects with PETRONAS in Malaysia, SONANGOL in Angola, and Oil India Limited (OIL) in India, focusing on methane measurement, flaring reduction, and technology sharing.

In Malaysia, TotalEnergies signed a collaboration agreement with PETRONAS, the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC), and JGC Corporation to establish the Southeast Asia Methane Emissions Technology Evaluation Center (SEA METEC). Based in Malaysia and led by PETRONAS, the regional facility will evaluate methane measurement and monitoring tools. TotalEnergies will provide technical support leveraging expertise from its TotalEnergies Anomalies Detection Initiative (TADI) testing platform in France.

In Africa, TotalEnergies executed a Memorandum of Understanding with Angola’s state-owned SONANGOL to expand technical cooperation on decarbonisation and flaring reduction. The agreement utilizes TotalEnergies’ Airborne Ultralight Spectrometer for Environmental Applications (AUSEA) technology to improve emissions reporting, energy efficiency, and facility electrification, while exploring financial support through the World Bank’s Global Flaring and Methane Reduction Fund.

Concurrently in India, TotalEnergies and Oil India Limited are expanding field monitoring operations following an initial one-month AUSEA campaign that surveyed 20 operational sites in Assam. The companies have initiated a second one-month aerial detection campaign to cover additional OIL-operated assets across the region.

Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of TotalEnergies, stated that joint technical initiatives with national operators reflect the core objective of the OGDC, noting that technology sharing and standardized measurement are essential to reaching near-zero upstream methane emissions by 2030.
