Retail conglomerate Walmart has announced a strategic investment in Base Power, a Texas-based distributed energy enterprise, alongside a commercial partnership to offer Base’s home energy products directly to Walmart customers and Sam’s Club members.
Under the terms of the agreement, starting in November, eligible customers and members who enrol in Base’s home battery program at participating retail locations will receive a 20 per cent discount on the standard upfront battery installation fee. The partnership aims to expand household access to lower-cost power solutions while providing backup generation during power outages.
Base Power operates an asset-ownership model where the company installs, owns, and maintains whole-home battery systems, charging consumers an upfront installation fee that represents a fraction of the capital expenditure associated with traditional home backup generators. In eligible Texas electricity markets, Base also operates as a retail electricity provider, integrating distributed home batteries to manage peak grid demand.
Key operational, commercial, and market details include:
- Retail distribution footprint: In-store Base representatives will launch across participating Walmart and Sam’s Club locations initially in Texas, with plans to expand to additional regional markets over time.
- Upfront savings: Customers enrolling via retail stores receive 20 per cent off Base’s standard installation fees.
- Operational scale in Texas: Base currently serves over 35,000 members in Texas, including more than 20,000 households with installed residential battery systems.
- Grid and household impact: Systems are designed to lower consumer power bills during normal grid operation while providing automated backup power during grid disruptions.
Zach Dell, Chief Executive Officer of Base Power, stated that the partnership aims to bring affordable electricity and reliable backup power to families by combining Base’s home energy infrastructure with Walmart’s retail distribution network.
Shayne Wahlmeier, Senior Vice President of Walmart Energy, added that partnering with Base Power offers customers a practical method to manage residential energy expenses, secure outage protection, and support overall electrical grid stability.
