Best Buy achieves zero-waste supply chain milestone

Consumer electronics retailer Best Buy has fulfilled a major environmental milestone by securing zero-waste certification across its entire supply chain network. The achievement completes a key corporate sustainability target originally established in 2021.

The company confirmed that all 29 of its distribution and logistics sites have met the Total Resource Use and Efficiency standard, administered by Green Business Certification Incorporated. To earn the designation, facilities must divert more than 90 per cent of operational waste away from landfill, undergo routine waste audits, strictly control contamination levels, and enforce comprehensive zero-waste policies. The initial facility to reach the benchmark was located in Chino, California, with the remaining operations brought up to standard over subsequent years.

Company representatives attributed the achievement to upgraded packaging designs, expanded recycling operations, and the launch of site-level employee initiatives known as green teams. These internal groups provide peer training and drive localized diversion strategies. Best Buy has also deployed industrial densifiers to melt and condense discarded expanded polystyrene into solid blocks, which external partners subsequently reprocess into insulation, building materials, and picture frames. Cardboard and soft plastics continue to account for the largest proportion of total recovered waste.

The announcement aligns with a broader series of environmental measures enacted by the business. Best Buy recently expanded its renewable energy infrastructure, installing a rooftop solar array at a retail store in New York alongside additional solar generation capacity serving a California distribution hub. The retailer maintains a overarching commitment to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.
