A comprehensive joint study conducted by Charge France, Alpitronic, and Transport & Environment reveals that the European transition towards electric mobility is moving faster than previously anticipated, offering significant advantages for consumer spending, climate targets, and regional industrial strength. Supported by fresh analytical data from the Boston Consulting Group, the findings confirm that pure battery electric vehicles (BEVs) represent the primary long-term route for light transport, rendering plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and range-extended electric vehicles (EREVs) merely short-term transitional options.
Market figures show a dramatic shift in consumer adoption across the continent. BEV market share rose from two per cent in 2019 to 16 per cent by 2025, with projections indicating complete market dominance between 90 and 100 per cent by 2035 if current trajectories persist. Historical barriers to adoption are simultaneously dissolving due to technological advancements. Latest-generation ultra-fast chargers now deliver 60 per cent capacity in under ten minutes, whilst vehicles launched in recent years achieve average ranges of 544 kilometres. Combined with narrowing resale value gaps and declining purchase costs, BEVs have become cheaper to buy and run than equivalent internal combustion or hybrid models.
Financial and environmental assessments within the report deliver a strong verdict against hybrid technology. An average driver saves up to €1,600 annually operating a BEV compared to a PHEV. Real-world usage data shows PHEVs operate on battery power just 45 to 50 per cent of the time for private motorists, dropping to between 10 and 15 per cent for corporate fleets. Similarly, EREVs rely on petrol or diesel generators for roughly 35 per cent of journeys. Whole-lifecycle emissions calculations show BEVs generate three to five times less carbon dioxide than hybrids and nine times less than traditional combustion engines, achieving a net environmental benefit after just 20,000 kilometres of driving.
Beyond ecological gains, the shift towards battery electric transport presents a substantial economic opportunity for Europe. Phasing out fossil-fuel transport could slash European oil imports by 15 per cent by 2035, conserving up to €45 billion annually. Furthermore, local manufacturing expansion is expected to generate 100,000 jobs in battery production alongside 70,000 positions within charging infrastructure development by 2030. To safeguard this progress, the report urges European policymakers to uphold the 2035 ban on new carbon-emitting vehicle sales, align tax incentives strictly towards BEVs, end policy support for hybrid models, and reinforce regional supply chains.
